Cladding and Box Beams are essentially the same thing- but usually, the word cladding is used when you need to cover an existing thing and build it out to be bigger.
Cladding
Interior or Exterior
You may be doing a new build and need to make your LVL or steel beam look like a timber.
You might have some teleposts in your basement that you want to wrap with wood to look like solid timber posts
We use our Planed Smooth Recycled Douglas Fir for 90% of our cladding.
For most interior cladding we mill to 7/8” thick and plane smooth to ¾” thick.
For exterior cladding, we often go a bit thicker so that the boards can stand up to the demands of the weather.
Box Beams
We use the terms Box Beams, Faux Beams, Hollow Timber, and 3 or 4-sided ‘trimber’ beam; we are talking about a situation where you want to make it appear as though you have solid timber.
Often when our clients are renovating their homes they want to have ceiling beams or rafters or a ridge beam to make the room appear as though it is a timber frame. There are situations where the existing structure of your home cannot support the weight of a solid timber hung from the ceiling. Specifically in these ceiling situations, we build hollow beams to minimize the weight and for ease of installation. For your budget and sometimes depending on the size of faux beam you want, faux beams can cost more due to the labour involved in building the mitred corner box, but they are worth it to achieve the timber look without the weight. The advantage of using our Jacket Boards for faux beams is that you do not have to do the added step of staining the wood. If you like the character and colour variation it is a faster and more affordable option.
Our most popular styles:

What sizes can we do?
We can do nearly any size.
Nothing we do is standard per se, we do a lot of 7×7″, 8×8″ and 8×10″.
As a structural timber frame shop, we suggest that mimicking standard timber sizing will help achieve a genuine feel of timber construction. Standard timber frame construction for residential scale is 8×8” posts with 8×10” beams. The beam would be oriented being 8” wide and 10” high; having the thicker wood to give more strength in its height. Having said this; our most typical size for residential homes is a 3-sided 7×7” box beam.
If we need to do a ridge beam in an open area say with a 24’ high ceiling, we want the ridge to look impressive so we can join boards together to make you a beam that suits the space; say 12” wide and 18” high. If you don’t know what size you want; ask yourself about headroom. We encourage clients to do a mock-up with cardboard so you can tape that to the ceiling to see what size you like. Again, we can build anything.
What lengths can we do?
We can easily do 16’ lengths. We can do longer. This boils down to making your installation simple. It is often difficult to get a 20’ long box beam into a space in one straight run. In cases where 30-40’ runs are required, we make mitres on the ends of shorter lengths so that getting them up on the ceiling is much easier.
